Black Crow Studios update!

Thursday, July 4, 2013

OMG--it's pretty much all I can say.  Our custom ordered Black Crow Studios watercolor canvases arrived last week.  To say I am in love is an understatement!!!

I cannot say enough good things about my experience working with Black Crow! Tracy, the owner, sent me several renderings and choices of what the art work would look like before we made our decision and in person it was exactly what we thought it was going to look like!    I took forever to make a decision, but she was so kind and patient with me and as soon as I pulled the trigger, she was on it and it was shipped in no time!

I have always loved this long hall in our house, but now I actually admire it. If you are looking for beautiful, affordable, unique, bold artwork, you need to check out Black Crow!

I saw this on Facebook a moment ago---How great is this?!?

Sunday Cookies

So as you will come to learn this about me--I am a stickler for knowing what ingredients are in the food I feed my family.  I am not the person preaching on Facebook, but I am the Mom who returned all the mainstream Easter candy (think Snickers and M&M's) the night before after reading how much crap was in there.  I rely a lot on Trader Joe's for boxed/processed items (think cereal bars, crackers, etc).  Madeline, my daughter, LOVES the TJ's version of Oreos and we were all out, so I decide to make chocolate chip cookies last Sunday.

I found a great new recipe on Pinterest that I cut in half.  They taste really fantastic and I highly suggest this recipe!!!  The blog I picked the recipe up from could prove to be danger, FYI :)

It calls for chilling the dough and shaping your cookies taller--genius idea!

Madeline watching the progress :)

Finished product---super yummy!!!  The texture and flavor is so rich, you can have one and feel like you had dessert.

What is your favorite cookie recipe???

Dining Room- Urbane Bronze

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

I just realized I never posted an update on the dining room painting extravaganza that occurred at my house a few weeks ago!  Sorry about that :). After much blue tape and drop clothes, we were able to step back and say, "Wow, that's dark, but we LOVE it!"

I will say, challenges abounded with how dark this color is.  I had to give it an OCD inspection (which drove the hubby nuts!) to make sure little light spots where not showing through and the paint was even.  All in all--SO worth it and gives the bold punch this room needed!

Tan UP

Thursday, June 20, 2013

My sun-worshipping, baby-oiling, SPF 4 days are long-gone, but I try not to blind my friends and loved ones with the post-winter pastiness if I can help it.  Well, and there's also the fact that a sun-kissed glow just looks good.
A Mystic Tan is a great way to go if you want a quick, full body coat that will last up to 8 days, but if you're a DIY-er and like to try all the self-tanners out there, here are some of our favorites:

St. Tropez Tanning Essentials - Self Tan Bronzing MousseBliss - A Tan For All SeasonsL'Oreal Sublime Glow Daily Moisturizer + Natural Skin Tone Enhancer, Medium Skin Tones

St Tropez is known for its sunless tanners, and now has a great bronzing mousse in a formula we love.  It has a light, airy feel and smells great!  Bliss has such fun packaging and truly pampering spa products that we couldn't pass up the self-tan spray...and we weren't disappointed.  The color is great and realistic, and is easily applied.  If you're not a Sephora or Ulta frequent-flyer, you can find L'Oreal Sublime Glow Daily Moisturizer at most drug stores.  The Sublime line is one of the best drug store buys and gives the best color and application for the money.
Of course, a product can only do it's best job on a well-prepped surface, ladies!  So, exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!  Whether you're applying to face or body, remove unwanted dead skin cells and hair so that the product can easily penetrate the skin and give you the color you want.  We love our products, and recommend:
Clarisonic Mia is available in multiple colorsFresh - Brown Sugar Body Polish
We love a good scrub, so if you don't have a chargeable exfoliator such as the Clarisonic Mia, a physical body scrub, such as Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish works great and softens skin with nourishing essential oils to help your tanner sink in.  And, as always, nothing beats a good shave to remove that unwanted hair and leave a smooth surface.
So, tan-up, girls!  Let us know what your favorite tan prep strategies and no-fail self-tanning products are this season!

Just Peachy

Summer + Baking = Peach Cobbler...didn't you know?  Sweet, juicy peaches...warm, bubbly crust.  Ok, you get the point.  I'm always looking for easy, delicious, nostalgic recipes, and you can't beat this one with a stick!  It's easy, fool-proof, and only 4 ingredients!  You're welcome.
Good ole' reliable Pinterest.  I stumbled upon this recipe from Just A Pinch, and pinned it right away.  If anything, it wouldn't cost me much money if it completely failed, and I already had most of the ingredients in my kitchen.  So I tried it, and it rocked.  Then I tried it with apples, and that also rocked.  Now I'm thinking of trying it with cherries...pretty sure we know how that will end up...rocking.  The possibilities are endless.  Just like a well-tailored pencil skirt, I knew instantly that this was a good investment.  So, if you have granulated sugar, self-rising flour (or flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt), a stick of butter, and some sliced peaches, you've got the ingredients for a night of emotional eating; a meet-the-parents dessert pleaser; a welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift, or this past weekend at my house--breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Click on the 'Just a Pinch' link above for the full recipe, and get ready for your Paula Deen moment!

Artifacts Uprising

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Are you as addicted to Instagram as I am?  I LOVE IT!  I adore my iPhone and love the great filters you can find out there.  There are lots of additional apps that provide way better filters than just the standard Instagram ones.

I saw a post on Pinterest about Artifact Uprising and discovered this great little company.  You can upload your Instagram pics and have them printed in soft cover books in various patterns and formats.

Visit thier website in the link above
LOVE thier tagline, "Because Design Matters".  How great is that?

Needless to say, I have ordered 3 already--one for my parents, one for my Madeline's Aunt and one for us of course.  There is no way I could not have one!  My game plan is start making a book four times a year like fashion designers seasonal look books :)

Black Crow Studios

Friday, June 14, 2013

Have you ever heard of Black Crow Studios???  I discovered this fantastic company and art through a blog I follow pretty religiously called Look Linger Love (check it out if you have not already!).

Black Crow makes the most AMAZING watercolor wallpaper!!!

Say, What?!?

They also take this wonderfully beautiful wallpaper and put it on large stretch canvas.  Well, when our house caught on fire last year (more about that, I promise) and we had to replace practically everything in the house, I decided I wanted a stretched canvas piece.  Although, hindsight 20/20, I should have just did this amazeballs (yes, I just said amaze-balls) wallpaper in the dining room.  It would have looked so great.  I am now having regrets, great!

Well, we have this long hallway on the first floor of our house where pre-fire we had 5 large framed photographs.  The standard stretched canvas, which is 42x90, was too small for the length of this wall so I contacted Tracy, the owner of the company, and asked her if she was willing to do something creative and cut up a large canvas into 5 equal amounts so we can frame them like our photogs were.  She graciously agreed and our art from Black Crow is in route as we speak!  I will post pics once I put my husband through the awful task of hanging 5 large frames with perfect spacing :)

It is not about work life balance...

Monday, June 10, 2013

So as I mentioned before, I own a business.  My company, Kingston O'Neill Search (check us out at www.kingstononeill.com) is a search firm, which is a fancy way of say we are recruiters.  We work very specifically in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology space and companies hire us to help them identify talent.  I LOVE my job and feel so lucky to have found "my calling" so to speak.

Okay, so my point--I hear people ALL the time say, "I want better work/life balance" when I ask them why they are considering a new opportunity.  I think this has become a catch phrase that everyone is using.  Here is my personal opinion, and it may not be a popular one, but I think the concept of work/life balance is overrated.  I think it needs to be about work/life integration.  I can only speak for myself, but I am a lot happier when I feel like I can do it all, versus compartmentalizing my life.

So how exactly does one integrate???  Here are just a few ideas:

  1. Get a good smart phone!  I swear by my iPhone and find that it gives me the freedom to feel comfortable walking away from the office at 5:00 pm.
  2. Meal plan, but only a few days in advance.  I can only speak for my family and the whole "plan the entire meals for the week" thing does not work for us.  Tastes change and we like to mix it up.  So, every Monday we decide what we are doing for that evening and Tuesday.  Every Wednesday we decide for that night and then Thursday and then every Friday is pizza usually (boring I know, but easy and fast!)  I find that knowing what I am cooking during the work week takes the stress out of that time of day.  The weekends I usually try new recipes.
  3. Give yourself a break!  I recognize that as a business owner I may have a degree of flexibility that is not always there when you work for someone else, but twice a week I give myself what I call a "meeting time".  I step away from the office and do something with my daughter and I tell myself that if I was meeting with a client right now, I would not be plugged in.  It is my way of letting myself off the hook.
  4. Get back on at night.  If you need to respond to emails in the evening once the kids have gone to bed and it enables you to leave the office at a reasonable time and spend time with your family in the evening, do it.  It is worth it!
  5. Take long weekends.  I am personally not a fan of taking a week off at a time.  Owning a business that is client driven does not allow me to unplug for 5 days straight.  I end up working the whole time and then I am mad at myself.  I would much rather take a 3-4 day weekend once a month.

These are just a few suggestions.  I would love to hear some of the ways you integrate your life and work?!?

Weekend WISE: Dating and the single gal

Friday, June 7, 2013

So...technically...I'm on the market.  I say this enthusiastically, because categorizing myself as an aspiring wife carries the undertone that I feel it's necessary to be married to have a fulfilling life.  Actually, I feel it would be an enhancement to the life I'm already so proud of.  That being cleared up, there's the issue of the D-word.
The ever-evolving, ever-awkward, ever-magical dating world has its perks and nightmares.  However you choose to tackle it--be it online, just plain blind, sports-playing, speed-dating, or becoming a regular stool pigeon bar fixture, there are some things to remember...
Dating is a discovery phase, and it's important to treat it like an interview of sorts.  It has to be a good fit for both of you in order to become a full-fledged relationship.  You date to determine fit, and sometimes, the fit just ain't right.  Women are notorious for taking on the responsibility of making things work for both parties in a relationship, so remembering that you can only control yourself is key.
I get much inspiration and reality kicks in the face from one of my favorite relationship blogs:  Baggage Reclaim.

Here's some helpful tidbits to remember from one of the posts on this blog:

"Unfortunately, we don't all date for the same reasons...my motivation + your motivation may not bring about an ideal situation...

LOOKING FOR A RELATIONSHIP + LOOKING TO PASS TIME = YOU BEING IN LIMBO   WHILE THEY FLIP FLAP

LOOKING FOR A RELATIONSHIP + LOOKING FOR A SHAG = YOU BEING USED FOR A SHAG & BEING AN ‘ACCIDENTAL BOOTY CALL’

LOOKING FOR A SHAG + LOOKING FOR A SHAG = GOOD TIMES (but if you change your mind and start looking for a relationship, you’ll become an accidental booty call)"

So wade into that dating pool wisely this weekend, single gals.  Make sure it's a fit, and that your motivations are the same before diving in.  Read the inspiration behind this post here:  http://www.baggagereclaim.co.uk/why-dating-is-a-discovery-phase-to-work-out-if-you-want-a-relationship/

Do you love yourself? Well you should!

This was advice last week from my 3 year old, yes, my wise beyond her years 3 year old.  I am so glad she is picking up these concepts early on in life and I am so hopeful that she carries this confidence and security with her into her teen and young adult years.   What random words of wisdom do you hear from your kiddos???

Dining room in progress

We have started painting the dining room Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams.  It is dark and I love it!  By the look of things, you would think we are creating a kill room (for the Dexter fans out there!)

Will post completion photos once we get there!

Old Navy: A go-to for toddler cuteness

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

I am not a big fan of Old Navy for Women's clothes.  I find the material to be thin and sort of cheap, but their toddler section is often times spot on.  The quality seems to be much better and I find myself always asking, "Why can't I find this in adult sizes???"  Here are a few items I recently picked up for my little lady.  They are running (as always) a killer sale!!

Denim Vest? Yes, please!

I love the classic black and white instead of pink and purple everywhere

Seriously!?!

I have a TOTAL bathing suit obsession---this will make number 7  for the season...need to stop!

Could this be any cuter???

Love the Ombre!

A summer must have!

Follow-up: Threshold

As I mentioned last week, Target has an awesome collection called Threshold.  I love it!

The pic below is from the foyer in my house.

The grey tray, large piece of white coral and the glass container are all from Target!  I think each piece was under $30 bucks too!  The shells and the starfish are from a recent vacation and the mercury glass candle holder is from Ballard Designs (long ago).

What great things have you found at Target???

Obsession: Notecards

Monday, June 3, 2013

Soooo, I have many obsessions and they all happen to be pretty darn random.  I am sure there will be posts about Trader Joe's (don't get me started--super obsessed!).

So I have a family member who has to buy razors every time he goes to the store.  Let's just say, he has an insane back log of razors.  I have the same issue with notecards.  My favorite spot for notecards is Target (surprised?).  I can't go there without looking at them and buying.  I think I am becoming the "cat lady" of notecards!  Here are my latest find---adorable, or what?!?

I love dropping an unexpected hand written note in the mail.  I think in the world of text messages and email, it is just so nice to take it back old school.

50 Shades (more like 150) of Gray

Friday, May 31, 2013

Urbane bronze by Sherwin Wiliiams--LOVE it on paper! We just rebuilt our house (post about that later...I can explain) and I am not in love with the dining room color we selected.  We went with Intellectual Gray and I think a change-a-roo is in order.  Getting a sample tonight and will post pics next week!

Tricky Liquid Liner

In my never-ending quest to perfect the 5-minute face, I have to admit that liquid eyeliner was never a featured player.  Too much concentration, steady hands, and gosh darn patience involved...not to mention factoring in starting over after a complete catastrophe.  Lately, as the "cat eye" and the well-defined "dough eye" have taken center stage, it seems that some popular brands have made it a bit easier for us glam gals to put the professional touch on our look without breaking the bank.

L'oreal and Maybelline have some good choices...what gets it done for you?

Too Pretty!

Thursday, May 30, 2013

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.  I just saw this necklace via a store here in the Raleigh, NC area that I follow on Facebook.  It is called Swoon Boutique--thought I would share.  This is a MUST HAVE!

And at $42.00, this is a no-brainer!

Well Played Target

I admit, I love Target.  I absolutely am one of the many people who can't spend less than $60 bucks minimum every time I go in there.  They have this card that you can link with your checking account and it gives you 5% back as well as free shipping at Target.com, but I never remember to take a check with me so they can link it!  Who carries checkbooks these days???  I have to give MAJOR kudos to whomever came with the Threshold brand and concept.

They have some damn cute stuff and the prices are totally affordable.  Even the logo is pretty chic.  I have bought a Threshold item it seems from every department where the brand is featured.  It is a home run for sure!

I will post a pic over the weekend of one of favorite Threshold finds here in my house--See y'all soon!

Weekend Wife (noun)

Monday, May 27, 2013

So what exactly is a weekend a wife, you ask?

The traditional definition is a woman whose spouse travels for work so she only sees them on the weekend.  Our definition is a little modified.  A Weekend Wife is a working woman who may not have the time to get a well-balanced meal on the table Monday-Friday, but come the weekend, watch out--she is on her A-game!  She is style-focused, cooks a mean meal and knows how to pull it all together.  Our Weekend Wife may or may not have a ring on her finger, but she is a dish of equal parts ambition and domesticity, garnished with style and sprig of sass.

This blog is our opportunity to provide a look into what it is like for us to be Weekend Wives--what we love and can't live without, our elements of style, and our two cents.  Thanks for coming along for the ride!

Get to Know Us

Sarah
I am a thirty-something single gal from Raleigh, NC with a big city sense of style.  I value all of the traditional comforts of home with a modern twist.  I am goofy, genuine and tall (it's my signature adjective).  Megan and I bonded years ago over our mutual appreciation of jewelry and the rest is history.  We both have a lot to say and we are in agreement that life has been our best teacher.  We couldn't have stumbled upon a more creative outlet for ourselves, and we suspect there will be something here for the working wife, the stay-at-home wife, the aspiring wife and the former wife.

Megan
I am a wife, a Mommy to an amazingly awesome little lady, a business owner and lover of all things chic, sophisticated and family focused.  I am brutally honest and LOVE authenticity.  I have known my good friend Sarah for years and adore her.  After constantly liking and re-pinning each other on Pinterest and having tons of shared style passions, we decided to embark on this blogging journey.  Thanks for joining us and we look forward to getting to know you!

Happy Memorial Day!!

Coming Soon!

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

We are working on launching Weekend Wives and hope to get started right after Memorial Day.  Thanks for checking it out and come on back soon!
